Haiti’s Beautiful Beaches

Labadie Beach Resort

From the NYTimes: Labadie Journal: Amid the Woe, a Haitian Paradise Beckons

There is Haiti, the poorest nation in the hemisphere. And then there is this slice of Caribbean bliss surrounded by security fencing with all-you-can-eat buffets.

This other Haiti has a stunning stretch of white sand between turquoise water and lush rolling hills. There are Jet Skis and beach chairs, and work is under way on a zip line that will send giddy adventurers across the bay on harnesses at heart-pounding speeds.

Getting there and getting away: take a Royal Caribbean cruise or drive up from Cap Haitien.

This is a welcome change.

Royal Caribbean used to play down the fact that this stop is in Haiti, referring to its location as Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It changed its description after Haitian officials complained.

We had wanted to visit when we did our Haiti trip this past August, but didn’t end up getting the chance. We went for a nice pool dip at Hotel du Roi Christophe instead.

I gotta say, I wholeheartedly share Mr. Delatour’s dream.

Of interest: Heading South

Thanks, Megan.

Yes, I was aware of the fact that Royal Caribbean was trying to hide the fact that this spot was in Haiti. As a Haitian man I was offended by it, but at the same time was glad that any cruise line ship spot in my homeland. That’s something that a lot of other caribbean nations take for granted. But me as a young Haitian that’s something I am accustom of.
