Mixing Polyester Resin (Google Video)

by Catherine Laine
April 8th, 2007

Polyester Resin in incredibly nasty stuff, but its use in an “important part of composite manufacturing”. The crew at Instructables show you how to mix resin “safely and with an acceptable margin of accuracy.” As always with Instructables, the comment section is very informative. So don’t miss out.

This video was made by 2007 HPV Team at the University of Central Florida. Long, but with lots of info. Note: The powder that they are using is Cabosil. Use a mask, or even better, a fume hood if you are going to be using the stuff.

At Make, also see how to make molds like a pro and how to work with carbon fiber.

Polyester resin is not good to work without gloves or mask. This product is known to cause cancer if mishandeled. It would be a lot safer to use an Epoxy resin. Plus you would have a lot less smell. I buy all my resin and epoxy from a company out of Orlando Fl. www.reynoldsam.com
