The micro-hydroelectric project currently being performed by XelaTeco is funded by the Small Grants Program under the UNDP-GEF.
Here is information from the Small Grant Program (SGP) website about what they do and their current goals.
- Launched in 1992, SGP supports activities of non-governmental and community-based organizations in developing countries towards climate change abatement, conservation of biodiversity, protection of international waters, reduction of the impact of persistent organic pollutants and and prevention of land degradation while generating sustainable livelihoods.
- At present, 95 countries participate in SGP having ratified the conventions on biological diversity and climate change.
- The overall SGP project portfolio comprises 60% biodiversity, 20% climate change, 6% international waters, and 14% multi-focal issues.
- The maximum grant amount per project is US$50,000, but averages around US$20,000. Grants are channeled directly to CBOs and NGOs.
- More than 7,000 grants have been awarded worldwide to date, with many benefiting multiple communities.
The Finca project falls within the climate change focal area of the SGP. More specifically, our work Promotes “the Adoption of Renewable Energy by Removing Barriers and Reducing Implementation Costs”. As of Oct 2006, the SGP has funded 1162 projects in the climate change arena with grants totalling $24,664,625.
