AIDG Haiti: Shelter2Home (Rapid Investment) |
|
In response to the devastating 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti Jan 12, 2010, AIDG has done several rapid investments in local businesses that can help with reconstruction. As a permanent measure we have also expanded our business incubation strategy to include enterprises specializing in disaster
resistant housing. The Government of Haiti estimates that nearly 200,000 homes in Port-au-Prince and environs have been destroyed or damaged.
One of new businesses AIDG is supporting is Shelter2Home-Haiti SA who we granted a $15,000 emergency loan to help launch operations in country. The company, which will be based in the northern city of Cap-Haitien, produces emergency and transitional shelters from light gauge galvanized steel that can later be converted into permanent homes. According to CEO Donald Stevens, "Shelter2Home is the only Transitional/Emergency Shelter System that can be converted to a Permanent Home or systematically upgraded over time".
