Internships with AIDG

To the engineer falls the job of clothing the bare bones of science with life, comfort, and hope. --Herbert Hoover

The AIDG  Intern Program (For Reference: Program Terminated 12/2010)

What is the Intern Program?

The AIDG Intern Program seeks to provide assistance to AIDG's incubated businesses in the form of specialized training and product R&D by bringing in talented young professionals and experts from around the world with a passion to contribute to the developing world and help make a difference.

In addition, the AIDG Intern Program provides an opportunity for graduates and professionals of all ages to augment their skills, gain experience working with sustainable technology, understand first-hand the challenges faced in developing countries and provide valuable assistance to those in need. It also provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with a dynamic, talented and focused group of people all working together towards the same goal.

Currently, AIDG has interns in our head office in Boston, in Xela, Guatemala and in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. Requirements for interns vary depending on our current projects and the needs of the incubated businesses. The positions range from hands-on engineering research and development, to outreach and facilitation with communities, to business and marketing development.

Current internship position vacancies can be found at the following link: Current Internship Openings. Also on our website are descriptions of current and former interns.

Interns vs Volunteers - What's the Difference?

Many volunteer programs offer participants opportunities to experience working in the developing world at a cost to the program participants. However due to the nature of our work and our projects, AIDG requires candidates with specialized skills who are available for a greater length of time (3 - 12 months). In exchange for their time and expertise, AIDG therefore offers successful candidates a chance to participate in the Intern Program. This program covers basic living costs for program participants (in the form of housing and a modest food reimbursement) in order to minimize the personal cost to participants while they are working with AIDG.

Interns working with AIDG will generally get involved in design, fabrication, field testing and development of appropriate technologies, which include windmills, solar PV/thermal systems, pumps, composting toilets, hydroelectricity, water filters, and eco-construction, and will also be involved in challenges such as marketing and business development for the developing world.

 Who Should Apply?

The Intern Program is not targeted specifically at undergraduate and graduate students seeking work experience - it is designed for anyone who is ready and willing to learn and gain experience living and working in the developing world, with a passion to help others.

We require talented candidates with skills suited to the particular position offerings, as outlined in the position descriptions. In addition, candidates should be versatile, mature, flexible, motivated, and friendly. They should have a willingness to get hands-on and dirty, and the ability to work independently. Applicants should expect to work approximately 40 hours per week, and some weekends during field trips and installations. They should also be willing to help on other projects as required. Time commitments vary depending on the positions, however in general a minimum of 3 months commitment is required.

Preferred Qualifications and Application Instructions   Refer to Current Internship Openings for specific skills and requirements for each position. In addition to technical expertise, applicants should have some prior international experience, an understanding of appropriate, sustainable technology, and the ability to speak the language in the country where applying. Closing dates vary for each position. Applications should be sent to Dorit Leavitt at internships [at] aidg [dot] org. Please ensure you fully review the AIDG website and this posting before sending emails with questions. Thank you for your interest!
