AIDG & XelaTeco Bring Renewable Energy to Rural Community
XelaTeco, AIDG's first incubated business, completed a micro-hydroelectric project in El Palmar, Guatemala in December 2006 that is providing 40 families (roughly 200 people) with electricity in their homes for the first time.
Before the existence of XelaTeco, an isolated village like the Comunidad Nueva Alianza (CNA) had few options for getting electricity, let alone renewable energy. Due to their remoteness, an electric grid extension was years if not decades away. Read more. |

What's Next for XelaTeco
In 2007, XelaTeco renews its commitment to provide affordable electricity, sanitation and clean water to the rural poor. The one-year-old company strives to do this and help reduce the human impact on the environment at the same time. How? This photo shows why cleaner burning fuels and high efficiency stoves are needed by so many families. Cooking with wood over open fires leads to indoor air pollution. According to the World Health Organization, "[e]very year, indoor air pollution is responsible for the death of 1.6 million people - that’s one death every 20 seconds." Women and children are most vulnerable because of the amount of time they spent near the hearth.
