Sam Redfield on Pico-hydro at La Florida
People at La Florida, one of our community partners in Guatemala, used to travel 1 hour away to charge their cell phones after their electric generator broke. Sam Redfield, the developer of a simple pico-hydroelectric system writes about his invention and how it can help La Florida and other rural communities who are far from an electric grid. In November/December, we will be deploying 5 of these systems to Haiti.

Haiti thrashed by successive hurricanes
2008 has been an incredibly difficult year for Haiti. Food riots struck the nation in April. An occupation of government buildings by ex-military happened in July, Most recently, four powerful hurricanes thrashed the island in September: Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike.

AIDG's response to Haiti Hurricanes
In Haiti, the floodwaters from September's onslaught of hurricanes are subsiding. People are trying to get their lives back on their feet, but progress and reconstruction are unbearably slow. In addition to the work we've been doing to get a municipal biogas plant set up in Cap Haitien, we're doing several smaller projects to help communities meet some of their most pressing energy needs.

AIDG & UC-Berkeley Designers Team Up to Bring Affordable Solar Water Heaters to Guatemala
At AIDG Guatemala, we have 2 promising designs for solar water heaters that we’re hoping our incubated businesses can produce for about $100. Since 2007, we've been partnering with a research team from UC Berkeley on a batch collector which may be ready for roll-out by XelaTeco in 2009.

AIDG quick updates:
- AIDG Executive Director, Peter Haas was named an Architect of the Future by the Waldzell Institute. The prestigious Austrian Institute honors young visionaries who work to realize a better world.
- In New York at the end of November? Check out XelaTeco's ballast load controller used in our micro-hydroelectric systems on display at the Wired Store in NYC. It's a pop-up retails store, so more details to come later.
