Wind provides one of the most prevalent and untapped sources of energy in our world today. Wind has been used by many cultures for pumping for centuries and in many locations provides a clean renewable source of electricity. Even commercial wind power systems often produce less electricity than most grid connected homes consume. But in areas with unreliable grid connections and lower energy demands these systems can quite literally be a huge windfall for communities in need. Unfortunately most commercial wind power systems are beyond the financial reach of many communities. The wind systems produced by AIDG contracted workshops use simple low cost designs that are both rugged and low cost utilizing materials that in many countries would be considered scrap or recycled.

Axial Flux Windmill

Axial Flux Windmill The primary design utilized by the AIDG is a wood blade, automobile brake drum rotor spindle windmill, that can produce as much as 1,200 watts in high winds and starts producing in a slight 5mph breeze. This is an extremely rugged simple design adapted from those of Hugh Piggott and Otherpower.com. The primary rotor comes from an automobile wheel spindle and thus is well suited for spinning at high revolutions under heavy strain for years on end. The coils are wound and connected in star formation for 110 volt AC output which is then rectified for battery charging. The blades are carved out of 2X10s and are easily replaceable in case of damage.

Radial Flux Windmill

This design windmill we are experimenting with in response to the need to produce a lightweight lower cost wind option that produces less power. We are currently experimenting with permanent magnet alternators, and low cost blade construction options. These designs are adapted from the experiments of Ed Lentz and windstuffnow.com .
